You are warmly invited to attend the free online seminar “Advancing sustainable aviation in an evolving atmosphere”, presented by Prof. Dr. Irene Dedoussi from the University of Cambridge.

The seminar will be held online on Friday, 17 April, from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM (Brussels CEST).

Participation is free, but registration is mandatory. Before registering, please check the VKI eligibility criteria.

If you are eligible to attend, you will receive the connection link a few days before the event.

Abstract: Aircraft engines emit exhaust gases and particles into the atmosphere, impacting the environment, leading to air pollution and contributing to climate change. Our atmosphere is a complex system of coupled non-linear physical and chemical processes, and evolves over time. This means that for some pollutants, the same emissions mass will have different impacts depending on where and when it is emitted. In the quest to make aviation’s transition to sustainability as efficient and effective as possible, technological (aircraft & engine designs), operational, and regulatory interventions would need to account for these atmospheric systems and processes. This talk will cover a set of modeling approaches quantifying how atmospheric non-linearities affect the pollution and climate impacts from aircraft operations globally. We will also discuss novel data-driven ways of estimating real-world emissions of the aviation sector

Biography: Dr Irene C. Dedoussi is an Associate Professor in Sustainable Aviation and Energy in the Department of Engineering of the University of Cambridge and a member of the Whittle Laboratory. Prior to joining the University of Cambridge, she was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering of TU Delft, with which she remains affiliated. Dedoussi is a fellow of the Netherlands Academy of Engineering and a member of the Young Academy (De Jonge Akademie) of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). She holds a PhD in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT, an SM in Aeronautics and Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT, and a BA (Hons) and MEng (Hons w/ Distinction) in Engineering from the University of Cambridge (St John’s College). https://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/research/academics/fellows/dr-irene-dedoussi
